Images from ‘Dry Run’ as part of the Hatton Gallery exhibition ‘Hit the Ground’ 16 September – 15 November 2009, 10am – 5pm (Sun 2pm - 5pm).
Photos by Simon Williams
Follow the emotional and psychological journeys of runners who are in training for their first Bupa Great North Run on this interactive website . Ten runners from across the country were equipped with Nokia phones that capture information on every training run including GPS co-ordinates, routes and images. This data, combined with a psychological profile of the runners after every run, has been reinterpreted by NAME, Atau Tanaka and the Culture Lab team to create a beautifully abstracted visualisation of what it feels like to run. Explore the work at www.dry-run.org or visit the Hatton Gallery to view the related exhibition.
Produced in collaboration with Clic Mobile, David King and with the support of Nokia, Ali Colling, the University of Newcastle Digital Media Department and the University of Northumbria.

Quantic’s Colombian combo at The Sage Gateshead
September 7th, 2009 · No Comments
This coming Sunday we are helping to promote Quantic’s Colombian combo at The Sage Gateshead

More info below - should be a good night.
Sunday 13th September. Hall Two, 8pm. The Sage Gateshead and ¡VAMOS! present…
Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro
Forming from the ashes of Quantic Soul Orchestra, Quantic (Will Holland) upped sticks and embarked on his own South American adventure… Now settled in Colombia he presents his new South American band of Barbarians (or outside of Europeans) - ‘Combo Bárbaro’. Fusing psychedelic, experimental and rhythmically rich sounds of Latin America, Africa and Caribbean past this new group give new life to the ever-evolving musical landscape of the Americas.
If you like the trippy cumbia of Chica from Peru, classic Nuyorican grooves,
the straight up sass of salsa or any of the previous Quantic manifestations then you’ll love this!
To get a FREE taster from the album go to www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2009/06/arianita for a (320) MP3 of ‘Arianita’ for your iPod!
‘The album is amazing, with the real coup being the string arrangements by Brazilian genius Arthur Verocai.’ The Independent
Support on the night is aptly provided by North East Peruvian DJ, musician and promoter DJ Alx Alfaro. Behind many of the region’s best loved Latino fused club nights expect a mixture of latino rythmns…
The Sage Gateshead, Hall Two, 8pm
Tickets: £15 (Club style)
Ticket Office - 0191 443 4661.

———————–
The final NONAME party of the Summer and after the epic set from Jackmaster we are chuffed to present one of the most precocious talents in electronic production - JOKER. Hailing from musically ever vibrant Bristol town Joker, (Kapsize, Hyperdub) was born to Grime and adopted by Dubstep. The 19-year-old Joker refuses to be tagged although, his soul drenched productions have been described as Jehri Curl Boogie and Wiley stuck in an elevator with Cameo.
He burst onto the Dubstep and Grime scenes in 2008 with the vibrant ‘Grimey Princess’ and ‘Gully Brook Lane’ which were released on Earwax and Plastician’s Terrorhythm imprint respectively. His productions possess a rare duality in that they are both instantly identifiable yet impossible to classify. His musical peers include Rustie, Gemmy, Guido and Kode 9, the Hyperdub label boss and recognised tastemaker, identified Joker as one to watch when he named him as his protégée for Mary Anne Hobbs’ hugely seminal follow-up to Dubstep Wars, Generation Bass which was broadcast worldwide on BBC Radio 1.
Joker and Nomad’s video can be viewed on Youtube and in testament to the level of interest in this Bristolian talent, continues to be the highest viewed video of the Maida Vale session.
And to further his admiration for Joker, Kode 9 went on to release via his Hyperdub imprint one of the tunes of 2009, Joker’s “Digidesign”
His productions are battered by Djs including Appleblim, Pinch, Plastician and Rustie, he’s been named Pitchfork’s Producer Of The Year and releases on his own imprint, Kapsize, such as “Purple City” and the amazing Rustie collaboration “Play Doe” have sold out in a matter of days!
Most recently with fellow Bristolian contemporaries Guido and Gemmy, Joker has been the feature of a major article in the Guardian siting their “Purple” sound as the future of electronic music.
www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/12/guido-joker-gemmy-purple-bristol
“The next big sound in UK dance music is coming out of the west” THE GUARDIAN
“2008 Producer Of The Year” PITCHFORK
“Joker is Bristol’s biggest new guy on road” NME
“Everyone’s going loopy for Joker” FACT
“Immediate Impact” PLAN B
Mixes:
Alongside Joker we’ve more than adequate back up. First up the North East’s own CATHODE who played a fantastic kraut driven live set last Summer at The Tyne just after the release of his latest album ‘Sparkle Plenty’. Steve’s is a singular and refined talent and a lovely fella to boot and we are pleased to have him back on the bill at The Tyne.
TONY DALY is the part of Suono, the slo-mo disco clan who recently celebrated their 5th Birthday with Dj legend and innovator Greg Wilson. They have been one of the most consistent nights to pursue and push something different musically and have brought to the region amongst others: Kelvin Andrews, Moonboots, Ashley Beedle, Danny Webb, Phil Mison and recently cosmic legend Daniele Baldelli. Tony will do doubt play whatever he wishes and we wouldn’t have it any other way…
NIK BARRERA who as part of the NONAME team has for a long time been established in the region as a Dj, promoter and creative type. Previous club incarnations and involvements include Traveller and The Bing Bong Rooms. Currently taking 3D DISCO™ to the masses with NOVAK
NOVAK is made up of 5 artists and 3 creative businesses in the North East and work on a variety of projects from arts events and festivals, DJ, AV and Vj performance as well as design and motion graphics - they are also the brain-children behind 3D DISCO™ which made it festival debut performing every night of Glastonbury this year and have recently supported Kraftwerk!
Big thanks to ‘Drop the Bass’ for topping it all off with the soundsystem (www.dropthebass.co.uk)
Things kick off from 5pm and it’s all definitely wrapped up by 11pm and is FREE so make sure you get early!
