Open City background:
Open City is a unique FREE programme of simple and fun digital activities over three days at the brand new City Library in Newcastle upon Tyne. Aimed at all age groups with a particular focus on the young and old, the programme presents a accessible selection of sessions, demonstrations and workshops that all use new and innovative technologies in immediate ways.
Most of the programme is open source and open access in some way allowing the building to feel like it is over-flowing with digital creativity! The Open City programme has been curated by NOVAK Collective. The Open City programme is delivered in partnership with DGB Events.
The Open City 2009 programme:

Animata lets you create animation and interactive projections, and, when combined with the video-tracking elements of software Isodora, imagery and scenes can be manipulated in real time. Join choreographer Amanda Drago to create a scene by choosing a character, animal or object and make them dance by responding to your movements in real time. More information on Animata can be found here.

Tagtool - Draw shapes and figures and see them animated on a big screen.
More information on Tagtool can be found here.

Take part in our story telling project Photo Bank. Add your comments and memories to photographs from the library archive of Newcastle. Artists and writers will take the content and produce daily edits to be displayed digitally in the Bewick Hall. Photo Bank will uniquely illustrate what you think makes our city so special.

CultureLab - Students from CultureLab at Newcastle University will showcase their innovative and interactive work with a particular focus on touch screen technology. More information on Culture Lab can be found here.

Friispray - Create vibrant digital graffiti with an electronic spray can. More information on Friispray can be found here.

UK Game Boy Youth Ensemble - workshops teaching young musicians how to make music on old school Nintendo Game Boys! We want eight participants to create this Game Boy ensemble.

D-Touch - A DIY open source project where you can create a drum machine out of everyday objects! More information on D-Touch can be found here.
‘I love drawing, if you love drawing you’ll love this’
Late addition to programme: Derrick Walsh
Derrick will be showcasing some of the drawing systems he has developed on Nokia mobile phones, systems specifically aimed at young people through technology that is becoming increasingly the norm.
All events and workshops are free. There may be age restrictions on some activities. To book the Game Boy Youth Ensemble workshop call 0191 277 4100. City Library, 33 New Bridge Street West, Newcastle, NE1 8AX.
